International Award

Bangkok Prep is proud to deliver the The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award.

About the Award

Not all learning happens in the classroom. Young people need experiences outside the classroom to become committed, responsible and fulfilled citizens of the world.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is available to all 14-24 year olds and is the world’s leading youth achievement award. It equips young people for life regardless of their background, culture, physical ability, skills and interests. Doing the Award is a personal challenge and not a competition against others; it pushes young people to their personal limits and recognises their achievements.

Since its launch over 60 years ago, the Award has inspired millions of young people to transform their lives. Through non formal education, the Award can play a critical role in a young person’s personal development and is achievable by any 14-24 year old who wants to take up the challenge.

The Award at Prep

Students participate in a range of activities to work towards their award. These can be part of the after school enrichment programme that we offer, or an activity organised outside of school. Students need to complete a minimum amount of time (level dependant) on a physical activity, a skill and a service, where they contribute something to society. These ideals of the International Award fit nicely with Prep’s own life values and offer our students a well-rounded, holistic learning experience.

What does it involve?
There are three levels to the Award; Bronze, Silver and Gold. Each has a different time requirement. By taking part in the award, students will develop a variety of skills, and undertake an adventurous journey. The activities need to be logged weekly onto the International Award database, so that the Coordinator can track progress.
Below are the time requirements for each area and level:

Physical recreation Skills Service Adventurous Journey Plus
Bronze 3 months 3 months 3 months 2 days, 1 night Additional 3 months in one of the sections
Silver 6 months 6 months 6 months 3 days, 2 nights Non bronze holders must do an additional 6 months in one section
Gold 12 months 12 months 12 months 4 days, 3 nights Non Silver holders must do an additional 6 months in one section

Adventurous Journey

A major part of the International Award is the Adventurous Journey. In 2017, Bangkok Prep students took part in the first Bronze expedition. In the 2017/2018 academic year, this has expanded to include a Silver and Gold expedition.
