Music

Primary Music

One of the key elements to arriving at an understanding and appreciation of music is to recognise the linguistic properties inherent in music. Consequently, the students at primary level will acquire a knowledge and understanding of music in much the same way as they would acquire a knowledge and understanding of any new language i.e. by learning to read and write, and to speak and listen. An understanding of the written form of music (usually referred to as the 'theory of music') is crucial in providing students with the confidence to explore music for themselves. Thus, some of the basic rudiments of music will be taught. This will also help in their efforts to 'write' music (often referred to as 'composition'), and to be creative with sound. Listening, or developing an aural awareness, will also be a key feature of the primary music curriculum this year, students being encouraged to explore and express their ideas about music with an ever-more critical ear. Finally, the 'speaking' - or, in other words, the performance of music - will be encouraged at every opportunity. Assemblies, concerts, end-of-term shows will provide the platform for students to share with an audience the fruits of their labours.

Secondary Music

Music classes in Key Stage 3 are about developing a well rounded understanding of music today. Students will study many different facets of music, beginning with exploring sounds in Year 7, to World Music in Year 8, and a History of Western Music in Year 9. Each year will include theoretical and practical components of Music Theory, Music History, Composition, and Basic Singing and Keyboard skills. Students are expected to practice their critical thinking skills using listening assignments and written work.

Music in Key Stage 4 is an IGCSE examinable subject. Students are expected to draw on and enhance the knowledge gained in Key Stage 3. Students must study an instrument and perform regularly. They also complete regular listening and written assignments. Coursework includes solo and group performance, score studies, and listening. Students are expected to learn about the History of Music (including prominent composers), Composition, Theory, World Music, Performance, singing, and keyboard technique.
