Notable achievements outside the classroom
This summer, Achira Chumchaivate (Monte) in Year 4 participated in two international tournaments in San Diego, USA; IMG Junior World Championship and the Future Champions Golf World Championship. The first event is said to be the most competitive junior golf tournament in the world. A hundred junior golfers for all over the world aged 7 to 8 years competed during the 3-day tournament. Monte claimed the 1st runner-up position at score 3 under-par. While at the Future Champions Golf World Championship, Monte broke the tournament record by hitting 7 under-par on a 9-hole round and won the tournament at 13 under-par which was 11 strokes better than the second place.
Monte was also selected by the Thailand Junior Golf Federation to represent Thailand in the Zhang Lian Wei Cup International Junior Invitational held in Shenzhen, China. This tournament hosted by Zhang Lian Wei, China’s legendary professional golfer, is the largest international junior golf event in China. After the 2-day competition under rainy and windy weather, Monte secured the winning position at -1 under par.
More recently, Monte joined a tournament organised by the Thai Students Golf Union at Watermill Golf and Garden, and played against competitors aged under 11 years old. Monte won 1st place in the competition with a score of 8 over par which was 5 strokes better than the second place.
Malissa Saengtubtim, Year 7 student, won the second prize in the “Category C” award at the Churairat Piano Competition 2015 which was held at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre.
Thun Osirichaivait (Pepe) and Poohpha Warakulnukroh (Pooh) Year 9 and Year 7 students joined the Jr. NBA National Training Camp 2015. Both students were selected in the top 20 players out of 1200 participants to join the world class JR NBA camp. Pepe received a ‘Hustle Award’ in recognition for his consistent effort and outstanding determination while Pooh had the honour of playing with Mr Terrence Jones, professional basketball player for the Houston Rockets in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The camp was a great opportunity for the pair to improve their basketball skills in a professional environment as well as demonstrate good sportsmanship.
The second edition of the Royal Varuna Summer Regatta attracted 38 boats from clubs along the Eastern Seaboard, allowing strong competitive action during a typically quiescent time of year. From Friday 31st July to Sunday 2nd August, a group of Bangkok Prep students, Lathavit Thananitayaudom (Win) in Year 9, Alex and Miki Romanyk, Year 5 and Year 10 students participated in the Summer Regatta held in Pattaya, Thailand. New to 2015 was a Laser 4.7 youth fleet. At the end, the two brothers (Miki and Alex) achieved great results; Miki won 1st place in the Laser 4.7 Class and Alex got 1st place in the Optimist Class.
Another great competition was the 4.7 Laser class in JVK Eastern Seaboard Regatta held at the Royal Varuna Yacht Club for which Arthit Romanyk (Miki) in Year 10 achieved 1st place. This 3-day National sailing regatta brought 12 sailors from around Thailand. Amongst the competitors were athletes from the National Sailing Team. Lathavit Thananitayaudom (Win; Year 9) also joined the competition and achieved 5th place overall.
Michael Mathayomchand (Mike) in Year 11 had a very successful summer. He won the championship for all 3 USTA Level 1B tournaments held in the USA. In the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand (LTAT), Mike ranks number 10 in the U16 age group.
More recebntkgt, in Year 11 placed 5th in the Chang-LTAT Jr Championship in Trang. After rain delays and long days of matches, Mike won the Championship for U16. Well done!
Kimberly Goodburn (Kim) in Year 12 played his first Rugby League game for the Southerners’ adult team in the ‘Bangkok 9’s Rugby League’ competition. The Southerners won the cup, with Kim scoring in each of the matches and 6 tries in total. Kim was the highest scoring player in the squad! As a result of his performance, Kim was asked to join the “Thailand All-Stars” National team in their match against Japan last October.
Kimberley Goodburn, Year 12 student, entered the 100m and 200m U18 men’s races at the 9th Annual Burapha University Open Athletics tournament. Kim set fantastic records and personal best (PB) times achieved as follows:
200m qualifying round: won with an electronically timed PB of 23:13
200m final round: 4th place with an electronically timed PB of 23:07
100m qualifying round: 2nd with an electronically timed PB of 11.23
100m final round: won 3rd place medal with an electronically timed PB of 11:18
